I wondered if I missed my chance | Alexandria Virginia Boudoir Photographer

I’ve said in once and I’ll say it again: Boudoir is for any life stage and any (adult) age!

I hear it all the time, where women think boudoir is only for certain ages, or certain occasions. When in fact, I have clients well into their 60’s and 70’s ready to celebrate themselves. You know why? Celebrating yourself isn’t capped at a certain age. Nor do you need a special occasion like a wedding, anniversary or birthday to do one.

Here at Julie Socher Boudoir in Northern Virginia, we celebrate all life stages and milestones, or “just because.” So when Ms. J came in for her shoot and told us about her hesitations, we quickly reassured her, right now, is actually the best time.

In her words:

How would you rate your boudoir experience on a scale of 1-10?: 10+!!! Outstanding

How has your boudoir experience affected you or changed you?: Before My shoot I kept wondering if I missed my window for an experience like this. Maybe I should of done this 10 years ago. I thought I’ll just go and hope for the best and if I get a couple good ones I’ll be happy! Now I can’t wait to do it again ! Now, not only do I have some fun memories, I have some beautiful photos to look and when I’m feeling down and a nice surprise for my husband as well !

What advice would you give someone who was nervous about or hesitant to book their own boudoir experience with me? : Be confident that Julie will bring out the best in you. If you are not sure what to bring ... bring it all. I did and she guided me. Nothing like an expert opinion. You might arrive nervous and anxious but you will go home smiling, confident and even laughing !

How to choose your boudoir photographer | Washington DC boudoir photographer

So you’re looking into having a boudoir session for yourself and you want to make sure you’ve picked out the best photographer for you. I’ve put together a few tips to help you decide and what to consider when choosing your photographer.

Some questions to ask yourself:

1) Do you love their style and artwork?

Check out their website, their social media for more examples of their work and look for consistency. Do the subjects in their photos appear relaxed or even look like they are having fun? This will give you a solid idea of how your photos will look and most importantly, do they have a diverse portfolio of ethnicities and body types?

2) Do they offer a complimentary consultation?

You should never agree to book with a photographer before you know all the details and everything that you will be investing in. Boudoir shoots aren’t like regular portrait shoots and being well informed on their processes and offerings are very important when making your decision. In addition to meeting your photographer and going over the details, they should make you feel comfortable and feeling comfortable is super important. Boudoir photography is something where all the details matter.

3) Do they specialize in Boudoir photography?

A photographer who is experienced in boudoir will most likely be experts at posing all body types and have invested in their own education on specializing in this genre of photography. They will want to know why you’ve decided to have a boudoir session so they can tailor your session to you and are experts at guiding you through an experience that is most likely out of your comfort zone.

4) Have they had their own boudoir session?

It’s so important for your photographer of choosing to have done a boudoir session for themselves. They will know the exact emotions you are going through and should always walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

Look, it’s me!

5) Are their boudoir sessions full service?

The boudoir photoshoot process is outside everyone’s comfort zone, so having a photographer that will walk you through every step from consultation to product ordering is important. Do they offer hair and makeup and help with wardrobe selection, will they guide you through posing and even help you select your photos and design your final product? These are all great qualities for a professional boudoir photographer.

6) What is their privacy policy when it comes to your photos?

This one is really important. Because of the sensitive nature of boudoir photos, you want to make sure that you give permission to the photographer via a model release to use your photos for promotional purposes and social media posting. I take this one seriously and go over the model release with all my clients that way they can either give me permission or opt out. You have full control.

This is something that you are investing in, something you not only want to gift your partner and have them be blown away by, but this is an unforgettable experience for you that you will remember forever!

Definitely look around, check out other photographers. I’m here if you have any questions and more than happy to hop on a zoom call with you for a complimentary, no obligation consultation.
