Meet your artist | Yisell Santos

Tell us about you:

Hi!!!!  I'm Yisell and I do hair and makeup for a living.  I've been doing this for about 13 years and have loved every second of it.  When I was a child, I knew I always wanted to help people.  I thought I had to do that by being some sort of doctor or nurse.  I even went to school for nursing but quickly changed my mind when I realized that it wasn't for me.  Helping women feel beautiful and see themselves in a different light is what I was born to do.  Nothing feeds my soul more than when a woman looks at herself in the mirror and loves the way she looks.

Are you in full glam mode everyday?

Oh gosh, no!  While I do have a daily (not at all glam) makeup routine, I've perfected doing this in 10 minutes or less.  It's more of a ritual at this point and it makes me feel put together and puts a pep in my step.

What is your "go to" look for your own hair and makeup routine?

I don't feel complete if I don't have some winged liner and mascara on.  Those are a must for me.  Anything else depends on the day...concealer, blush, eyebrows and a statement lip.  As for hair, I have a pixie cut so hair for me is pretty simple.  Some hair paste and I'm out the door.

What is your favorite boudoir makeup look?

I'm a fan of statement lip colors, long lashes and glowy skin.  Those just scream "sexy" to me.

Working with a wide variety of clients, how do you manage different skin tones and hair textures?

As a hair and makeup professional, it is important to me that I know and understand all hair and skin no matter the color or texture so that my clients always feel included.  I keep up to date with all hair and makeup products especially for Women of Color.  The question always arises if I'm able to accomodate a certain skin color/hair texture.  The answer is always yes!

What are your top 3 favorite products?

This changes from time to time.  There's so much makeup out there and I love a lot of it!  Currently, my favorite things are JULEP "Skip the Brush Blush" Cream to Powder Blush, BECCA Highlighters and the LimeLife by Alcone Enduring Lip Colors.

If you could tell your clients anything before their boudoir session, what would it be?

Do this for yourself and never mind what anyone thinks.  You are worth it and deserve this FOR YOU!  We, as women, are so hard on ourselves and our bodies.  Doing a boudoir shoot really lets you see yourself how others see you.  As a powerful and confident woman who can take on anything. You are worthy.

Where can someone find you for services other than boudoir?

Confidence is Contagious

K was super pumped about her shoot and going through a life change, what a great way to celebrate this new chapter in her life. 99% of all my clients are unsure about doing a shoot and don’t think they can do something like this. But when she saw her friend do a shoot and saw her photos from her session, that gave her the confidence that she too, can have this experience!

To me, this is the perfect example of women uplifting other women!

What inspired you to do a boudoir session?: A friend of mine going through a similar life change

What made you decide to schedule your session with Julie?: The first time I saw a photo my friend shared with me I was hooked!

What was your biggest fear in doing a boudoir session? Did it come true? What happened instead?: I think the biggest "fear" was the unknown. I had never really thought of myself that way or thought I would be able to find outfits to wear that would help me feel good about my body after 2 kids.

What was your favorite part of your boudoir session?: Every, single, second of it. From the moment I got in the car to head over there until the moment I left and everything in between. I just took it all in and enjoyed every second.

If you were to recommend us to your best friend, what would you say?: I already have! I have 2 friends so far that I know are going to schedule sessions - one of whom I actually went to go see immediately after getting my photos to show her and right then she emailed Julie ;) You don't have to SAY anything - just show them your photos and that's it ;)

Her Session Made Her Grateful for Her Body

You might have heard me say this before, but a boudoir session for yourself is a way forward toward self acceptance. I know you might be planning this as a gift to someone else knowing this is really a gift for yourself. Even though this wasn’t a gift for anyone but herself, S, celebrated herself the best way she saw she could. Which was with a boudoir session after seeing someone in a video who has the same medical condition as her. You can check out the original video that inspired her HERE

To be apart of S’s journey toward self acceptance and love is an absolute honor and and I’m so grateful that she chose and trusted me to show her sensual side which will serve as a reminder for years to come when she flips through her album of images at how strong, beautiful and bad ass she is!

How would you rate your boudoir experience on a scale of 1-10?: 10

How has your boudoir experience affected you or changed you?: I struggle with a long term medical condition that has some unfortunate aesthetic/physical side effects and it’s been a struggle to view my body in a positive manner, especially as I’m in and out of doctors appointments every week. I had started to feel like a science experiment instead of a human. I was only seeing myself as a medical condition, but this experience has made me grateful for the things my body still does for me.

What advice would you give someone who was nervous about or hesitant to book their own boudoir experience with me? : I wouldn’t be hesitant at all - it’s a once in a lifetime (or more) opportunity and something really unique. There’s no reason NOT to give it a try and Julie coaches you every step of the way. In terms of advice - I made myself a little crazy preparing for the photoshoot, I was distracted in my personal life because I was focusing on workouts, eating clean, buying outfits, designing my hair nails and makeup ideas... I accidentally shut the garage door on my car as I was still backing out, oops. Although I’m proud of the preparation I put into it, I wished I had paced myself a little more somehow. I’m naturally an intense person and put 100% effort into everything, but I could have paced better!
